There were a couple nights with rain and we didn't have any trouble with the water draining from under our tent tarp. Our tent is 16x10 and fit nicely on the site. When we called we asked for the most isolated tent site. Our family of four prefers to camp where it's quiet and away from the RVs. Our tent site was located at the back of the campground being bordered by the Black Hills National Forest land. Horse Thief campground was at a great location it is located off a lesser traveled highway just outside of Hill City. Thank you so much - we had a fantastic stay and will be back again! The pool and bathhouse were kept very clean (they were in throughout the days to tidy up the boathouse) and when some heavy rains washed out parts of the gravel roads, it was fixed within hours. Our son was absolutely spoiled and Julie's knowledge of the area and local restaurants and directions was so helpful. Julie and the staff at Horse Thief provide personal and thoughtful customer service. We were able to do the Rushmore and Custer loop in a day and we took our time - it was lovely to take in the scenery and to lunch along the way. This is a very family-friendly campground and the quiet hours are actually quiet, which is for the best as most in the camp are gone during the day - the location is very close to Hill City (>a five minute drive) and Custer (about a 20-30 minute drive up Needles). We were near the bathhouse, and around the corner from the pool and playground. This area had the major benefit of being blocked by the wind on three sides, so it was very calm, even during bad stormy patches we kept getting hit with in the late afternoon. We were located with our backs to a hill and rocks think natural jungle gym - the kids love climbing, but can stay within sight from the campsite. We camped with a foot in both worlds, if you will - I tented and my parents and son slept in a van camper. To echo so many others' reviews of Horse Thief, we had a fantastic stay here this last week.
